Meet your guide in Osaka or Kyoto for a 9–11 hour tour of Kyoto

This group tour departs from Osaka or Kyoto and takes 9 to 11 hours to visit Kyoto's UNESCO World Heritage sites and most popular sights. You meet your guide at the meeting point, and tours are offered in Chinese and English.

The tour brings together Kiyomizu-dera, Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and Togetsukyo Bridge, Kinkaku-ji, and Sanjusangen-do. Visiting all of these on your own would take a lot of travel time.

Because you don't have to plan transport or a route yourself, even first-time visitors to Kyoto can focus on the scenery and the temples and shrines themselves.

Start at the Stage of Kiyomizu, then stroll the stone-paved lanes of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka

The first highlight is Kiyomizu-dera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built on the slopes of the Higashiyama hills. From the famous "Stage of Kiyomizu," supported by a framework of many wooden pillars, you can take in views of the city of Kyoto and the surrounding mountains.

After paying your respects, head down to Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka. Traditional machiya-style shops and teahouses line both sides of the stone-paved lanes, and with a matcha sweet in hand, you can feel the atmosphere of the old capital as part of everyday scenery.

Within the Kiyomizu-dera grounds you will also find Jishu Shrine, known for prayers for good relationships. The Higashiyama area is also home to Yasaka Shrine, Hanamikoji Street in Gion, and Hokan-ji Temple, known for the Yasaka Pagoda, so you can enjoy one classic Kyoto streetscape after another.

On to Arashiyama: from Togetsukyo Bridge to the Bamboo Grove and Kimono Forest

In Arashiyama you have plenty of time, starting with a walk across Togetsukyo Bridge over the Katsura River. From the bridge, the river and the mountains on both banks open out before you, with scenery that changes with each season.

Next comes the Bamboo Grove path, the symbol of Arashiyama. Sunlight filters down through the bamboo that arches overhead, and simply walking through the stillness is an experience in itself. If you want photos, this is a must.

The "Kimono Forest," lined with pillars of vividly colored Kyo-yuzen dyed fabric, is another highlight. In this corner where tradition meets contemporary art, you'll find a different kind of beauty from the bamboo grove.

Kinkaku-ji's gold leaf and Kyoko-chi Pond, then the 1,001 statues of Sanjusangen-do

The afternoon highlight is Kinkaku-ji (Rokuon-ji), the three-story pavilion covered in gleaming gold leaf. Built in the 14th century on the site of a villa belonging to Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it is famous for its reflection on the surface of Kyoko-chi Pond, one of Kyoto's most iconic views.

The tour finishes at Sanjusangen-do. In its wooden main hall, about 120 meters long, 1,001 statues of the Thousand-Armed Kannon stand in neat rows, creating a solemn space that only a National Treasure building can offer. The name "Sanjusangen" (literally "thirty-three bays") comes from the spacing of the pillars.

The hall is also the site of the Toshiya archery event held every January, and standing inside it feels completely different from seeing it in photos.

Lunch plans: Kobe beef and pork shabu-shabu available

When booking, you can choose a plan without a meal, or a plan that includes lunch with pork shabu-shabu or Kobe beef. If you'd like to enjoy a meal along with your sightseeing, check which plan includes the menu you want when you book.

Kobe beef is a premium wagyu brand known for its fine marbling and a texture in which the fat and lean meat seem to melt together. Between temples and shrines, you can set aside time to taste one of Japan's three great wagyu brands.

If Kobe beef is what you're after, be sure to choose a plan with the upgrade when you book.
