90 Minutes Afloat on Miyakojima's Sea Under a Crimson Sky

The Miyakojima Sunset SUP & Canoe Tour is a roughly 90-minute experience in which you cruise across the water while watching the sun go down from a spot recommended by your local guide. The tour takes place around the Gusukube Tomori area of Miyakojima, and the meeting point is the free parking lot at Ingya Marine Garden.

Miyakojima has no rivers, so no sediment washes into the sea. The result is the famously clear water known as "Miyako Blue." By day the sea is a brilliant, transparent blue; as evening falls, it mirrors the sky and slowly turns a deep crimson.

After a busy day of sightseeing, the real charm of this tour is simply slowing down on a calm sea. On this experience, you'll savour that twilight hour from a board or canoe.

Safety at PiPi, a "Maru-Yu" Certified Shop

The tour is run by Miyakojima ADVENTURE PiPi, operated by NASH Co., Ltd.

PiPi is certified as a "Safety-Excellent Marine Leisure Provider" (commonly called "Maru-Yu"), a designation given only to operators that meet safety standards set by the Okinawa Prefectural Public Safety Commission. Only about 3% of operators in Okinawa Prefecture hold Maru-Yu certification (as of August 2025).

From strict life jacket use and carrying an AED to regular safety training for staff, PiPi has met rigorous standards for guide education and operations, so first-timers and families with children can join with peace of mind.

First, Choose SUP or Canoe

When booking, you'll choose either SUP or canoe. Here's how each one works.

■ SUP | For those who want to paddle their own board You don't have to stand: you can also sit or even lie down on the board. Follow your guide's instructions and find the position that suits you.

■ Canoe | For those who want to take in the scenery while seated You sit and paddle your way across the water. Two-person canoes are available, so you can enjoy paddling together with family or friends.

Whichever you choose, gear rental is included in the price. Stand and face the sunset, or sit side by side and take it in together: pick the style that fits your trip.

You can also enjoy SUP sitting down. If you're nervous about standing, just ask your guide.

Meet Your Guide On Site

The sunset plan is meet-on-site. According to the operator, the meeting point is the free parking lot at Ingya Marine Garden.

Meeting time is around 6:00 pm as a guide, but it varies with the season, weather and tides. In seasons when the sun sets earlier, the meeting time moves earlier too, so check the exact time and meeting spot in the information sent the day before your tour.

Arrive in clothes you don't mind getting wet. There are no restrooms near the site, so use one beforehand.

Once You're Ready, Paddle Out Into the Sunset

After your guide shows you how to use the gear and paddle, it's time to hit the water. As you paddle, watch the sky and the sea surface shift into evening hues.

If you're unsure about standing on a SUP, talk to your guide; you can enjoy it sitting down instead.

On calm days, the sunset and clouds may be reflected on the water. The view differs from day to day, but watching dusk fall from out on the sea is a highlight participants love.

The Moment Arrives: Facing the Sun as It Sinks Below the Horizon

The highlight of the tour is watching the sunset from a quiet sea as the sky turns crimson. Participants rate this part of the tour especially highly.

On calm days, the water reflects the sky like a mirror, and the sunlight stretches across it like a golden path. Capturing your own silhouette together with the setting sun is something only this hour can offer.

Note that the tour runs even when it's cloudy or rainy, so depending on the weather you may not see the sunset. The sky looks different every day, and on cloudy evenings you may be treated to clouds glowing with colour.

Finally, Receive the Photos Your Guide Took

Even after the sun has set, the sky keeps changing to shades of purple and pink. High-resolution photos taken by your guide during the tour are yours free of charge after the tour ends.

Your guide captures you out on the water, so you don't have to hold up your own phone and can focus on paddling and the view. You can share the photos with your travel companions that same day.

Since this experience uses the evening hours, it's easy to fit into your plans as the perfect end to the day; head straight to dinner afterwards.
