Four Adventures in Miyakojima's Sea and Limestone Caves

The "Miyakojima Complete Conquest Plan" is a combo tour that packs SUP, snorkelling in search of sea turtles, canoeing and caving in the Pumpkin Limestone Cave into a single day. Over roughly 7 hours, including a lunch break and travel, you'll explore on the water, under the water and deep inside a limestone cave.

The order of activities varies from day to day. Below is an example of how the day might unfold.

Safety First at PiPi, a "Maru-Yu" Certified Shop

The tour is run by Miyakojima ADVENTURE PiPi, operated by NASH Co., Ltd.

PiPi holds the "Maru-Yu" certification (officially, Excellent Safety Marine Leisure Provider), awarded only to operators that meet the safety standards set by the Okinawa Prefectural Public Safety Commission. Only about 3% of operators in Okinawa Prefecture hold this certification (as of August 2025).

From strict life jacket rules and carrying an AED to regular safety training for staff, PiPi meets demanding standards for guide training and operations, so first-timers and families with children can join with peace of mind.

First, Meet Your Guide and Get Ready

The shop will contact you the day before the tour with the meeting place and time. The tour generally runs from 8:30 to 15:30, though times may change depending on the season, weather and tides.

Free pick-up is available from accommodation anywhere on Miyakojima and Kurima Island. Irabu, Shimoji and Ikema Islands are outside the pick-up area, so guests staying there meet at the site. Even within the pick-up area, you may be asked to meet on site depending on bookings.

Gear rental is included. Wearing leggings or similar over your swimsuit makes it easier to join the cave exploration too. There are no toilets near the site, so be sure to go before meeting up.

Out on the Sea, Paddle Away on a SUP

SUP (stand-up paddleboarding) means riding a board and moving with a paddle. You'll start by learning how to use the gear, then get used to balancing on the water.

If you're nervous about standing, you can enjoy it sitting down. Follow your guide's instructions and paddle in whatever position suits you. Look around and you'll notice the white sand beaches, the coastline and the shifting shades of blue.

Next, Snorkel and Discover the Underwater World

Put on your mask and peer into the sea from the surface. Together with your guide, look for fish swimming around the coral and along the seabed.

You may encounter sea turtles, but as they're wild animals, sightings aren't guaranteed. If you spot one, don't chase or touch it; observe it as your guide directs.

Once you dip your face into the sea you were gazing at from above, you'll see the movements of fish and even the shapes of the coral. Keep an eye out for the smaller creatures, too. You might meet sea turtles in the sea. As they're wild animals, sightings aren't guaranteed.

Refuel at Lunch Before the Next Adventure

Lunch is on your own during the break. It isn't included in the tour price, so please bring money for it.

Your guide can recommend places to eat, so ask if there's anything you'd like to try. Be sure to confirm the meeting place and time for after the break.

Then, Canoe to the Pumpkin Limestone Cave

You'll reach the Pumpkin Limestone Cave by canoe from the sea. Once you've learned how to paddle, you'll set off with your guide.

Staying seated, you'll paddle along while taking in the coastal scenery. The route and views vary depending on conditions on the day.

At Last, Explore the Pumpkin Limestone Cave

After leaving the canoe, you'll enter the cave with your guide. This is caving: making your way through by swimming and climbing over rocky steps.

The highlight is the pumpkin-shaped stalactite that gives the cave its name. Get up close to its rounded, bulging form and the slender stalactites hanging below. Follow your guide's directions on where to go and how to move.

*As the Pumpkin Limestone Cave is a sacred site, photography is currently not permitted inside the cave and is allowed only at the entrance. The photos of the cave interior shown here were taken in the past.

Finally, Get the Photos Taken by Your Guide

You'll receive the photos your guide took during the tour free of charge. They capture moments that are hard to shoot yourself, like when you're on a SUP or snorkelling.

Once you have them, enjoy looking back through them with the family and friends who joined you. Please note that no souvenir photos are taken inside the cave.
