First Stop: A Miso Brewery to Discover Shinshu's Food Culture

Your first stop is Ishii Miso in Matsumoto. This roughly 30-minute visit takes you through a brewery lined with huge cedar barrels, where you will learn how miso has traditionally been made.

Standing in front of barrels taller than 2 metres, you realise that the miso on your everyday table is nurtured on a far grander scale than you might imagine. Listen to the story of the natural brewing method, and discover the flavours rooted in daily life in Shinshu.

Next: Suwa Taisha, an Ancient Shrine Steeped in Atmosphere

After the miso brewery, it's on to Suwa Taisha. With about 40 minutes of free time to pray and stroll, you can experience the faith that has been passed down through generations in Shinshu.

Suwa Taisha consists of four shrines located around Lake Suwa. Check the itinerary on the day of your tour to see which shrine you will visit, and take a moment to notice the architecture of the buildings and the trees within the grounds. Walking through the crisp winter air is a peaceful moment in your journey.

After Your Visit, a Japanese Lunch to Recharge

After visiting Suwa Taisha, you will have about 50 minutes for lunch. Enjoy the Japanese meal included in the tour and take a breather before the afternoon.

As you chat about what you saw at the miso brewery and the shrine grounds, your travel memories grow little by little. Once you've finished eating, it's time to head up to the heights of Kita-Yatsugatake.

Finally, the Ropeway to Kita-Yatsugatake's Winter Scenery

In the afternoon, you will ride the Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway in Chino City. A roughly seven-minute ride through the air takes you from the base station up to the summit station at 2,237 metres.

Outside the window, mountain slopes and trees draw closer and closer. At the top, enjoy the winter scenery that the day's weather and snow conditions bring. When conditions allow, you may see snow-covered trees and the surrounding mountain ranges.

The sightseeing time at the ropeway is about 1 hour 30 minutes, including the ride. Follow the guidance given on the day for where you can walk, and spend your time taking in the views and taking photos.

After enjoying your time on the mountain, you will take the bus back to Matsumoto and Nagano. On the way home, look back on the scenes of your day, from a miso brewery steeped in Shinshu life to the nature of the mountains.
