From Nagoya to Takayama's Old Town and Shirakawa-go's Winter Lights

This day tour takes you from Nagoya to Takayama and Shirakawa-go in Gifu Prefecture in a single day. The itinerary runs about 11.5 hours, from 10:00 to 21:30: Takayama by day, then the Shirakawa-go illumination at night. With a relaxed morning start and transport back arranged after your evening visit, it is an easy way to see both places.

You begin by walking through Takayama's old town, then head to the village of Shirakawa-go. After seeing the village in daylight, you finish with the winter illumination. Guiding is available in English and Chinese, and you will mostly explore on your own at each stop.

First, Hida-Takayama: Old Streets and Hida Flavors

Your first stop is the old town of Hida-Takayama. During about two hours of free time, you can wander streets that still hold the atmosphere of a castle town, taking in latticed merchant houses (machiya) and shop signs hanging under the eaves.

Between sights, look out for local specialties such as Hida beef nigiri and Takayama ramen. Meals are not included, so part of the fun is choosing what you most want to try.

When you pause for a break, keep an eye out for the sugidama (cedar-leaf balls) hanging from the eaves and for the crafts displayed in the shops. You'll enjoy your time in Takayama through its streetscapes, food and handmade goods.

Next, Shirakawa-go: Walking the Gassho-zukuri Village by Daylight

Leaving Takayama, you continue to Shirakawa-go. Large thatched-roof houses stand in a village surrounded by mountains.

Daylight is the perfect time to take in the shape of the gassho-zukuri houses and the thickness of their roofs. As you walk along the village paths, look for the rows of houses and views with the mountains behind them.

When snow settles, the roofs and fields turn white, creating a scene that belongs to winter alone. If you take in the village before dusk, the illumination later will feel all the more special.

*The amount of snow and the scenery will vary depending on the weather on the day of your visit.

Finally, Shirakawa-go Wrapped in Winter Light

Once night falls, it's time for the Shirakawa-go illumination. The gassho-zukuri roofs rise out of the darkness, showing a side of the village very different from the daytime.

Walk through the village and enjoy the houses and lights right in front of you. Look at the buildings up close, or step back to take in the whole row of houses. The view changes depending on where you stand, which is part of the pleasure of an evening stroll.

After your visit, you'll ride back to Nagoya by vehicle, ending the day with the lingering glow of the lights you found in a winter mountain village.
