Turn the Beauty of Kimono into Art for Your Home

This workshop is run by ikasu, a studio that creates artwork from vintage kimono. Their mission is to preserve the beauty of kimono that can no longer be worn, along with the skills of the artisans who made them, in a form that fits modern life.

Your guide is Lena Okamoto, the kimono expert and artist who founded ikasu. As you make your own piece, she shares insights into dyeing and weaving techniques and the meanings behind kimono patterns and colours.

In about 90 minutes, you'll go from choosing your fabric to making the panel and adding finishing touches with gold or silver leaf. Your finished artwork is yours to take home the same day.

The workshop takes place at Atelier + Gallery QUADRO in Meguro City, Tokyo. Meet directly at the ground-floor gallery.

Next, Learn About Kimono Patterns and Colours

During the workshop, you'll learn about the dyeing and weaving techniques used to make kimono, as well as the meanings woven into their patterns and colours.

If a particular design catches your eye, ask what it represents. Knowing the story behind your fabric gives you a reason to choose it that goes beyond simply liking how it looks.

Guidance is available in Japanese, English and Russian.

The Highlight: Choosing from 200+ Fabrics

The instructor has gathered more than 200 vintage kimono fabrics from all over Japan. Look at them, touch them, and hunt for the colours and patterns that speak to you.

Many participants have told the organisers that choosing the fabric was their favourite part. Feel the texture and see how the fabric changes in the light — details you simply can't get from a photo.

Once you've chosen your fabric, you'll work with the instructor to decide which part of the pattern to feature. Even with the same fabric, the final look changes depending on where and at what angle you cut it.

Turning Your Fabric into a Panel

After planning the layout of the pattern, you'll prepare the fabric and stretch it over a panel. All tools and materials are provided at the venue, so there's no need to bring or buy anything.

The instructor carefully explains the tips for each step. First-timers can check anything they're unsure about as they go.

Little by little, the kimono fabric in your hands becomes a piece of art for your room. Keep an eye on the placement of the pattern and the overall balance as you finish.

Finally, Add Accents with Gold or Silver Leaf

To finish, you'll use gold or silver leaf to give your piece a striking accent.

You take your finished artwork home the same day — a one-of-a-kind wall piece made from fabric you chose, with a layout and finish you designed yourself.

Beyond reusing materials, ikasu hopes to pass on the artisans' skills and the feelings of the people woven into each kimono. Take home the meanings of the patterns you learned along with your artwork.
